The Clinical Embryology Learning Laboratory Offers A New Pathway for Embryology Training

The Clinical Embryology Learning Laboratory Offers A New Pathway for Embryology Training

Date: July 17, 2026

Author: ASRM

The Clinical Embryology Learning Laboratory (CELL), was designed to address one of the most persistent challenges in reproductive medicine: how to prepare the next generation of embryologists without placing the full burden of that training on already stretched clinics. By combining graduate-level didactic instruction with hands-on laboratory experience at the CooperSurgical Center of Excellence, CELL gives early-career embryologists a structured foundation while giving labs a more efficient, consistent way to invest in their workforce.

The Embryology Training Gap

Since the birth of Louise Brown, embryology has rapidly evolved in clinical sophistication, but the field still lacks the kind of standardized training pathway that exists in many other areas of medicine. Many embryologists enter the field with strong scientific backgrounds, but without formal graduate-level education in reproductive biology or meaningful hands-on exposure to the clinical embryology lab.

“I personally, over all these years, trained the vast majority of people who worked [in my clinic], except maybe for a couple,” says Marina Gvakharia, MD, PhD, HCLD, ELD, Program Director for CELL and an embryology lab director with 32 years of experience.

Placing the burden of training on lab directors and senior staff means that much of the profession’s training varies from lab to lab and is often based on the experience and capacity of lab directors and leadership.

In addition to straining the lab’s capacity, the “train as you go” approach can lead to narrow, results-focused training.

“In many big labs, they only have time to teach an embryologist one thing,” says Lisa Wagner, PhD, TS, CELL Faculty and Director of Professional Education and Clinical Support at Cooper Surgical. “There are some embryologists who do nothing but ICSI all day long, every day.”

This approach is becoming problematic as embryologists increasingly move between labs, systems, and techniques throughout their careers.

Better-prepared Embryologists Build Stronger Labs

The value of CELL is a result of the quality and completeness of the training itself. The program brings together graduate-level instruction, hands-on experience, and faculty expertise in a way that yields a more well-rounded result.

CELL is not simply about teaching tasks; it is about building judgment and adaptability. By participating in a more inclusive program like CELL, trainees are not only learning what to do in the lab; they are learning why those steps matter, how different approaches can achieve the same goal, and how to think critically and troubleshoot challenges across different lab environments.

An Investment in the Future of Your Lab and Embryology

Many of the professionals who built modern embryology are nearing retirement, and clinics are already facing the consequences of workforce shortages, burnout, and uneven succession planning.

"In the next 10 years, the founders of this field will mostly be retiring,” says Stephanie Nichols-Burns, PhD, HCLD, CELL Faculty and Lab Director of Research at Yale University School of Medicine’s fertility center. “So the idea is that we need to bolster the upcoming generations so that they are equipped to be just as good, if not better.”

But without a stronger training pathway, the pressure on labs only compounds. CELL equips labs to move from reactive training to strategic workforce development. It creates space for labs to think beyond the next procedure, the next task, or the next staffing gap and toward the systems that will sustain embryology over time.

“The hope for the students is that they come out of it as thinking, independent, confident embryologists who can immediately be a benefit to your lab and be active on the bench,” said Dr. Nichols-Burns.

At the end of the day, you're gaining more knowledge,” says CELL Trainee, Andrea Guernon, BS. “You're gaining more confidence. You're gaining a networking system. You're making all these connections where you have resources to ask questions.

Applications for the 2027 CELL cohort are open now until October 31, 2026. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and are currently working or seeking work in an IVF or related laboratory. Preference will be given to applicants from SART member clinics. Click here to learn more and apply, or hear from current faculty and trainees.
