Tips and Strategies for Matching Into an REI Fellowship - SRS/SREI Bootcamp and wrap up
Transcript
Drs. Victoria Jiang, MD and Zachary Walker, MD share tips and strategies from the SRS/SREI Bootcamp and Wrap of this 4-part medtalk.
This may seem like a shameless plug for the SREI-SRS partnership in creating the Surgical Scholars Program, but there are three key things to these programs that are really unique. So one, you'll get a lot more experience when it comes to minimally invasive surgery. Every program is going to offer a lot of, you know, very straightforward hysteroscopies.
You get operative hysteroscopy, you get diagnostic hysteroscopy, you even get basic laparoscopy. But these SRS programs are going to allow you to have more myomectomy experience and endometriosis experience and being able to have those patient volumes that are going to be able to help with continuing your surgical training. The second aspect is you get a great didactics program that is focused on teaching you key aspects of surgical theory.
And the third aspect is you get to complete a research project looking at specific surgical questions so that you can continue that research as you move forward to an attending. And so these programs can be really, really helpful. So if surgery is something that you're interested in, make sure that you're applying to all those programs.
Mention your interest in surgery and make sure that you're ranking those programs really high on your list so that you can make sure that you get the surgical experience that you want to carry forward into your practice. Totally agree. So I think we talked about a lot in the past couple minutes.
Yeah. So let's try to wrap it up for these listeners. Yeah.
So I think whether it's your family, access to care, or surgical experience that you're considering, there are a lot of things to consider when it comes to geography that should play a role into how you rank your list. The first thing you think about is making sure, are you matching it to a program that has the type of practice style you're looking for? Is it private practice? Is it private-demics? Is it an academic? Regardless of where you match, you want to make sure that you're getting the experience that you have and then be able to find a good way of having a program that aligns with your future practice needs. And the second thing is when you're considering practicing in a mandated state versus a non-mandated state, definitely the financial talks are very difficult.
So always try to seek opportunities to hear those types of consultation and the advice that it's given to patients. And then also consider that into what you're going to do in your future career. And the third thing is, is make sure you're finding a program that matches your surgical needs as you carry that forward in the career that you want to be able to have.
There are so many different types of programs and finding the one that fits your needs is going to be the one that's going to be important in when you're deciding, applying, and ranking your programs. So thank you for coming to our ASRM med talk. It was nice to see you guys.
See you next time. Bye guys.
