ASRM would like to remember the individuals who have passed in the last year for their lasting impact on the reproductive medicine field.
John D. Naples, Jr., MD, an infertility pioneer, respected clinician, dedicated educator and member of ASRM died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 91.
Dr. Naples spent more than three decades in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology in Buffalo, New York, ultimately devoting his career to the investigation and treatment of infertility. After retiring from obstetrics in 1980, he focused fully on advancing care for infertility patients and training the next generation of physicians. He served as Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, where he was deeply committed to medical education and mentorship.
A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Naples completed his residency training in Buffalo and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps, including leadership of obstetrical and gynecological services at the Bainbridge Naval Hospital.
Throughout his career, Dr. Naples was recognized not only for his clinical expertise, but also for his dedication to his patients and his ability to bring humanity and compassion to the practice of medicine. He remained actively engaged in academic and philanthropic efforts, including establishing a scholarship fund to support students at Canisius College.
Dr. Naples joined ASRM in 2016 and is remembered by his family, colleagues, and the many patients whose lives he impacted through his care.
