Date: March 05, 2025

Author: Dr. Leslie Appiah, FP SIG Chair

The ASRM Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group promotes knowledge among health care workers and the public on infertility induced by cancer therapy and other medical treatments through national and international collaboration among Reproductive Specialists, Oncologists, and Allied Health Workers to promote research, education and to develop new strategies of fertility preservation.

Led by a dedicated team including Leslie Appiah, MD, Chair; Julie Rios, ND, Chair-Elect; May Tal Sauerbrun Cutler, MD, Vice Chair; Gwendolyn Quinn, PhD, Immediate Past Chair; Kara Goldman, MD, Past Chair; Rebecca Flyckt, MD, Outgoing Past Chair; and Joyce Reinecke, JD, Patient Liaison, the FP SIG stands as a vital force in the realm of reproductive medicine.

The SIG's core mission is to establish fertility preservation as a standard component of reproductive and medical care for individuals facing infertility risks due to genetic or iatrogenic causes. This ambition is pursued through a multifaceted approach, emphasizing the expansion of collaborative networks, the formulation of evidence-based guidelines, and the enhancement of public and professional awareness. The group is also dedicated to building a strong, diverse community of professionals, facilitating knowledge exchange, and advocating for policies that improve patient care. A crucial aspect of their work involves mentoring the next generation of experts, ensuring that all patients have access to fertility preservation options.

Looking ahead, the SIG envisions itself as an even more influential hub for collaboration, advocacy, and innovation. As the importance of fertility preservation continues to rise, the group is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping guidelines, advancing research, and expanding educational initiatives. They are committed to broadening their influence among community and academic providers, aiming to enhance guideline implementation, improve patient outcomes, and combat reproductive injustices.

Dr. Appiah attests that the SIG has been a game-changer in her career, giving her the opportunity to connect with experts, stay at the forefront of best practices, and make a real impact on fertility preservation in cancer care. Through this network, she has honed her strategic approach to oncofertility, influenced institutional policies, and strengthened patient-centered reproductive health initiatives. The SIG’s supportive and collaborative environment has also played a key role in her leadership journey, helping her bridge research, clinical care, and policy—ultimately contributing to her advancement to the rank of Professor.

Through its dedication to research, education, and advocacy, the ASRM Fertility Preservation SIG is ensuring that the hope of parenthood remains within reach for those facing medical challenges. Click here to learn more about the FP SIG.
