ASRM Member Spotlight: Sigal Klipstein, MD

Date: March 26, 2025

Author: ASRM

Meet Sigal Klipstein, MD, Director of Third party Reproduction at InVia Fertility Specialists.

Dr. Klipstein is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist at InVia Fertility Specialists in Chicago. She earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago where she is currently an assistant professor. She completed her Ob/Gyn residency and fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Harvard Medical School, from which she also holds a fellowship in medical ethics.

An ASRM member for 28 years, Dr. Klipstein joined during residency as she was interested in pursuing a career in reproductive medicine. She currently serves as Chair of the ASRM Ethics Committee and previously chaired the ACOG Committee on Ethics. She was a member of both the ASRM COVID-19 and the ASRM Donor Conceived People task forces. She has also served as a member of the ASRM Task Force on Ethical Embryo Research and its drafting subcommittee as well as liaison on the ASRM Practice Committee.

In 2023, ASRM awarded her the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award. She finds one of the best parts of being a member of ASRM to be the many wonderful friendships she has made and the collaborations with colleagues that have resulted from her work with ASRM. She also loves to write ethics opinions and enjoys the fascinating discussions with ASRM members. In emerging technologies, she is excited about the role of artificial intelligence in optimizing systems in the embryology lab and in improving sperm, egg and embryo selection and looks forward to seeing the ways in which AI will improve efficiency in clinical care, which will hopefully free up more time for clinicians to spend with patients. She tempers her excitement with the following thoughts:

We tend to be early adapters as a field, but it is important to step back and ponder the societal impacts of scientific developments. Just because we can do something does not mean we should do it. I have long been a proponent of trying to predict what the future might hold and considering the implications of these future techniques before they become available or clinically incorporated. We need to be ready for the exponential changes that are coming, and to assess them on their merits and on their ability to improve the lives of our patients and the future generations which we will help bring into existence.

Dr. Klipsstein believes ASRM is a true leader in the field of reproductive medicine and that our diverse membership has the power to shape the future of the field in a thoughtful, contemplative manner. She attests that we are resource rich in terms of brain power, particularly given the depth and breadth of experience of our varied members who represent all aspects of reproductive care and research, and our practice and ethics opinions and statements set the stage for the practice of reproductive medicine throughout the world.

Her best career advice is, “Don't limit yourself. Explore clinical care, research, and teaching. Find your passion and pursue it every day.” For someone new to AASRM she says, “Become involved! There is something for everyone. Join a committee, volunteer, attend ASRM, read the Fertility and Sterility suite of journals. The possibilities are endless.”
