What's New from the Fertility and Sterility Family of Journals

Date: June 25, 2024

Author: ASRM

Here’s a peek at this month’s issues from our family of journals! As an ASRM Member, you can access all of our journals.

From Fertility and Sterility

A randomized controlled trial to compare the live birth rate of the first frozen embryo transfer following the progestin-primed ovarian stimulation protocol vs. the antagonist protocol in women with an anticipated high ovarian response

This randomized controlled trial compares the live birth rate of the first frozen embryo transfer (FET) after ovarian stimulation by the progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol vs. the antagonist protocol in women with an anticipated high ovarian response who were undergoing in vitro fertilization. There was no statistically significant difference in the live birth rate of the first FET cycle between the PPOS and antagonist groups on the basis of both the intention-to-treat analysis, relative risk, and per-protocol analysis. Both groups showed comparable clinical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy, miscarriage, multiple pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, and cumulative live birth rates.

From F&S Reports

Three live births after human embryo vitrification with the use of aluminum oxide as an intermediate cooling agent: a case report

This case report looks at the possibility of increasing the cooling rates of the vitrification procedure in a closed system with the use of aluminum oxide as an intermediate coolant. After preliminary comparative studies of embryos frozen with aluminum oxide and a control group, the results showed no statistically significant difference between their quality and potential to reach to blastocyst stage. That gave us ground to apply the methodology in clinical practice. After the embryo transfer, 3 clinical pregnancies with successful live births have been obtained. The accompanying editorial, Vitrification: pursuing technologies to improve safety and efficacy, looks further into vitrification and what further research may be required to change clinical practice.

From F&S Science

Assessment of ovarian tissue and follicular integrity after cryopreservation via slow freezing or vitrification followed by in vitro culture

This study evaluates ovarian tissue and follicle integrity before and after slow freezing or vitrification and post-thawing in vitro culture. Based on the data, the study concludes that tissue cryopreservation followed by culture does not affect follicle activation and growth, but it decreases the proportion of viable follicles within the tissue. Slow freezing was superior to vitrification as indicated by a higher proportion of follicles with normal morphology, lower stromal cell apoptosis, and maintenance of CX37 expression post-thawing and after culture.

From F&S Reviews

Changes in the number and activity of natural killer cells and its clinical association with endometriosis: systematic review and meta-analysis

This review pools all available data from the literature and compares the differences in cell percentages and cytotoxicity of peripheral blood, peritoneal fluid, and uterine natural killer (NK) cells (pNK, pfNK, uNK) between individuals with endometriosis and those without and also examines the differences in NK cells between early and advanced stages of endometriosis. The consistent reduction of NK cell cytotoxicity across different samples (peripheral blood, peritoneal fluid, and endometrial tissue) may provide insights into the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Establishing standardized references for the cytotoxicity of uNK, pfNK, and pNK cells, as well as the percentage of uNK cells, is a prerequisite to determining their potential values in clinical diagnosis and treatments.
