Meet Winifred Mak, MD, PhD, Associate Professor and REI Fellowship Program Director at UT Health San Antonio. An ASRM member for over 13 years, Dr. Mak has a unique perspective on health care, as she has trained as an ObGyn resident in both the UK and the USA.

Meet Winifred Mak, MD, PhD, Associate Professor and REI Fellowship Program Director at UT Health San Antonio. An ASRM member for over 13 years, Dr. Mak has a unique perspective on health care, as she has trained as an ObGyn resident in both the UK and the USA. Her REI fellowship training was carried out at UPenn. She is an accomplished physician-scientist with a PhD in Genetics. Dr. Mak was one of the Women’s Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) scholars at Yale School of Medicine. She has received several ASRM small grants and is presently NIH funded as well. Her clinical expertise is in recurrent pregnancy loss. Her independent translational research program is focused on finding new causes of recurrent pregnancy loss. She has served as the Early Pregnancy Special Interest Group (EPSIG) Chair elect Chair, vice chair, and past chair and Chair of the Resident Curriculum subcommittee.
She joined ASRM to be involved in educating the next generation of REI both clinically and through research. She believes that ASRM provides a voice and education to REI worldwide on a broad range of topics from ethics to education of the next generation of learners. Importantly, ASRM provides guidelines for how REI should practice. ASRM is instrumental in providing research support for further the REI field. She asserts that ASRM has been instrumental in her development as a physician-scientist. The society has provided her with small grants that have sustained her research program until she got her big research funding break. Her best career advice?
