Iatrogenic and demographic determinants of the national plural birth increaseThe objective of this paper is to study the contribution of ovulation induction and ovarian stimulation, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and unassisted conception to the increase in national plural births in the United States which is a significant contributor to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes. The study results show that ovulation induction and ovarian stimulation are leading iatrogenic contributors to plural births. They are, therefore, targets for intervention to reduce the adverse maternal and infant health outcomes associated with plural births. Maternal age of ≥35 years is also a significant contributor to the national plural birth increase.
From F&S Reports
Concordance of hemoglobin A1c and reproductive hormone levels in menstrual and venous bloodThe objective of this study is to explore whether menstrual blood collected via a modified menstrual pad is a surrogate for venous blood drawn in analyzing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fertility-associated hormones. The study found that levels of HbA1c, TSH, AMH, FSH, and LH measurements in menstrual effluent showed a high correlation to venous blood samples, supporting the use of menstrual effluent as a surrogate sample for hormone testing.
From F&S Science
Embryos from vitrified vs. fresh oocytes in an oocyte donation program: a comparative morphokinetic analysisThis study compares the morphokinetic patterns of human embryos originating from vitrified oocytes with those derived from freshly collected oocytes in oocyte donation cycles. Fertilization rates were significantly different between the 2 groups whereas the degeneration, cleavage, blastocyst, pregnancy, clinical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy, implantation, and live birth rates were not significantly different between embryos derived from fresh or vitrified oocytes. Time-lapse analysis showed no significant difference in any key time parameter. However, when examining dynamic parameters, first cell cycle (CC1) (t2 − tPB2: from the second polar body extrusion (tPB2) up to 2 cells (t2)) showed a significant difference whereas CC1a (t2 − tPNf: from fading of the pronuclei (tPNf) up to 2 cells (t2)) was at the threshold of significance.
From F&S Reviews
Bioengineering: a promising approach for standardization and automation of assisted reproductive technologyAssisted reproductive technology (ART) is a commonly used treatment for infertile couples. However, the suboptimal success rate of ART highlights the urgent need for optimization. One promising strategy to significantly improve ART outcomes is to standardize and automate all steps involved, ranging from high-quality gamete selection to in vitro fertilization, embryo culture, embryo examination, and selection as well as gamete and embryo cryopreservation. Cutting-edge technologies, such as microfluidics and artificial intelligence (AI), have been developed for this purpose and have demonstrated remarkable potential in this area. This review provides a comprehensive overview of how microfluidics and AI are being applied in ART to advance the field and benefit patients.
