Cover The Uninsured Week 2007
Next week, April 23 through 29, Cover the Uninsured Week 2007 focuses on covering children as an important first step toward covering all Americans.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has again joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other influential organizations representing many sectors of American society, including business, labor, education, and health care professionals in supporting Cover the Uninsured Week 2007.
Reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is pending in Congress this year and there has never been a more important time to promote coverage for children and demonstrate support for the reauthorization of SCHIP.
Since SCHIP was enacted in 1997, the program has helped millions of American children get the care they need when they need it. SCHIP currently provides coverage to six million children whose parents work but cannot afford or are not offered health insurance. Kids enrolled in SCHIP can see doctors when they are sick and get check ups, prescription medicines and hospitalizations when they need them.
Although the number of uninsured children has decreased by more than a third in the ten years since SCHIP was enacted, there are, unfortunately, still nine million kids living without health insurance. That’s more than the total number of first and second graders in U.S. public schools.
This year, Congress must reauthorize SCHIP in order for the program to continue. Congress also has the opportunity to cover millions more uninsured kids, ensuring they, too, get the care they need.
We encourage you to get involved in any way you can to help get America’s kids covered. Cover the Uninsured Week 2007 (April 23-29) is mobilizing thousands of volunteers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to demonstrate broad support for the reauthorization of this vital program and the importance of kids’ coverage.
