“FRONTIERS IN HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS,” NIH-Sponsored Advanced Training Course to be Held at Woods Hole, May 30 through June 6, 2008
Application deadline: April 5, 2008.
Co-directed by Roger Pedersen and Gerald Schatten, FrhESC is an intensive laboratory and lecture course designed for individuals seeking comprehensive and sophisticated training in research strategies and state-of-the-art cellular, molecular and genetic approaches for advancing the Frontiers in Human Embryonic Stem Cell research. FrHESC is a dynamic, evolving course that includes the complete array of biological and medical perspectives from fundamental basic biology of "stemness" through preclinical and clinical trials evaluating these cells for therapeutic benefit. All training will take place in a rich intellectual academic environment of the teaching laboratories at the Marine Biological Laboratories at Woods Hole. The course consists of daily lectures from faculty and invited speakers, discussions and informal seminars, hand-on laboratory experience and demonstrations, and one-on-one tutorials. The schedule will be from 8:00 am through 8:00 pm each day. The FrhESC Course will exclusively use human embryonic stem cell lines on the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry.
FrhESC has been created for clinical and fundamental investigators (M.D., Ph.D.), either with well-established research programs requiring hESCs or nearing fellowship completion, who seek comprehensive and sophisticated training in research strategies and state-of-the-art methods on cell and molecular biological and genetic approaches for advancing human embryonic stem cell research. The laboratory is limited to 16 participants and fierce competition ensures that the selected participants represent an outstanding cadre of the most promising candidates.
In 2007, course faculty and speakers included Eric Ahrens (CMU), James Battey (NIH), Tony Beck (NIH), Susan Carlson (WiCell), Rudolf Jaenisch (MIT), Doug Melton (Harvard), Maya Mitalopova (Georgia), Peter Rugg-Gunn (Hospital for Sick Children), Lorenz Studor (Sloan Kettering), Elias Zambidis (Johns Hopkins), and from the University of Pittsburgh Carlos Castro, Naftali Kaminski, Christopher Navara, Kyle Orwig, Bruno Peault, Gerald Schatten, Stefan Schlatt, and Calvin Simerly. This year’s faculty list promises to be equally impressive.
