ASRM Disciplinary Policy
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine is a professional organization of physicians, psychologists, nurses, educators, researchers, administrators and lawyers dedicated to promotion of the highest standards of healthcare and scholarship in the field of reproductive medicine. In the interest of fulfilling its mission to the membership and to society in general, the Society strives to ensure its dignity and reputation through maintenance of high levels of ethical, moral and legal conduct. The Society values and promotes diversity among its members, officers and staff. The Society prohibits discrimination toward any member or employee due to race, color, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, disability, military status or other basis prohibited by law.
If the Board of Directors, by a two-thirds majority vote of all its members, finds that the conduct of a member has been injurious to the good order, peace, reputation, or best interest of the Society, or is derogatory to its dignity, inconsistent with its purposes, or shows a failure to maintain high ethical standards, the Board may expel, call for the resignation of, or otherwise discipline a member.
Actions that are considered to be evidence of conduct injurious to the best interest of the Society and inconsistent with its purposes include, but are not limited to:
- Conviction of a felony or of any crime relating to or arising out of professional activities, or involving moral turpitude.
- Limitation or termination of any right associated with professional activities in any state, province, or country, including the imposition of any requirement for surveillance, supervision, or review, by reason of violation of any act or other statute of government regulation, disciplinary action by any licensing authority, entry into a consent order, or voluntary surrender of license or professional certificate.
- Improper financial dealings or engaging in any activities which put personal financial consideration above the welfare of patients.
- Performance of unjustified medical or surgical treatment.
- Immoral, dishonorable, or unprofessional conduct.
- Failure or refusal to cooperate reasonably with an investigation by the Society of a disciplinary matter.
- Participating in communications to the public that convey false, untrue, deceptive, or misleading information through statements, testimonials, photographs, graphics, or other means, or which omit material information without which the communication is deceptive.
