ASRM 2008 Annual Meeting
Preliminary Program

Welcome to San Francisco!

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine will hold its 64th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA this year. San Francisco is an exciting city full of historical significance, celebrated symbols of American culture, and limitless sights and activities for visitors.

Attractions
Sights of interest to visitors include such locales as Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, home to the city’s world-class aquarium, a festival marketplace with more than 110 stores, 14 Bay view restaurants, and a variety of fun-filled attractions for all ages, including the world renowned sea lions, street performers and live daily entertainment.

Several parks are available for visitor’s enjoyment in the San Francisco area, including the Presidio, a former military post which has been transformed into a recreational venue featuring spectacular vistas, meandering trails and historic and architectural treasures. Additionally, Angel Island State Park is perfect for picnicking or just taking a break.

Metreon is the first-of-its-kind entertainment center located at Fourth and Mission streets in the heart of downtown San Francisco. This 350,000 square-foot complex features an eclectic mix of the Bay Area’s best restaurants, shopping venues, theatres, and entertainment destinations, including the West Coast’s largest IMAX theatre.

Fillmore Jazz Preservation District offers some of the best in Jazz/Rhythm & Blues entertainment in the City and ethnic dining featuring Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, and classic soul food.

Northern California’s largest zoological park, The San Francisco Zoo, features approximately 1,000 exotic and endangered wildlife. Visit the new Grizzly Gulch, home to two grizzly bears and stroll through the African Savanna habitat. Experience the wonders of the Children’s Zoo and visit other favorites such as Gorilla Preserve, Penguin Island, Koala Crossing, Lemur Forest and the Australian WalkAbout
.
Visitors may also want to consider seeing the Farallon Islands, a unique marine sanctuary to endangered whales, white sharks, dolphins, elephant seals and Orcas. And, don’t forget Alcatraz Island! Home to the famous former Alcatraz Prison, this is the most popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. Tours are often sold out two weeks in advance.

City Transportation
Getting around San Francisco is pretty easy. The city’s public transportation is the absolute best way for visitors to get around the city. San Francisco’s Municipal Railway, MUNI, is one of America’s oldest public transit agencies and today carries more than 200 million riders per year. MUNI provides transit service within the city and county of San Francisco 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Operating historic streetcars, modern light rail vehicles, diesel buses, alternative fuel vehicles, electric trolley coaches and the world famous cable cars, MUNI’s fleet is among the most diverse in the world.

Of course, you can also walk around the city. San Francisco is great for walking tours, as many of the city’s attractions are located in generally the same area. From Union Square and Chinatown to North Beach and SoMa, you can make it from one area to the next with a good stretch of walking. The weather is usually cooperative too-- balmy temps and a nice breeze from the bay.
