Washington, DC—The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and its affiliate, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), strongly oppose the recent staff cuts at key Public Health agencies within the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Elizabeth Ginsburg, MD, President of ASRM, said, “The terminations occurring today at FDA, NIH, and CDC are both dangerous and devastating. These agencies – and the talented, dedicated physicians and scientists who serve within them – play a critical role in safeguarding public health.  From evaluating new pharmaceutical products to monitoring health outcomes and conducting basic research, their work is essential to the well-being of our nation. We strongly condemn these thoughtless and reckless firings and call on the Trump administration and Congress to reverse them immediately.”

Micah Hill, DO, President of SART and a close collaborator with the CDC, added: “The CDC’s work is vital to the field of reproductive medicine. It is unclear how the agency will continue to meet its statutory responsibilities without staff. The depth of expertise held by CDC personnel will be difficult to replace. In many ways, the American public health system has been the global leader, and we are now in danger of throwing that away and doing so in a manner that may be very difficult to recover from. Nevertheless, SART has a longstanding history of independently collecting and reporting IVF outcomes data prior to the involvement of the CDC, and because we recognize the vital role this data plays, we will continue to do so.”

Sean Tipton, ASRM’s Chief Advocacy and Policy Officer, shared this message: “We are calling upon all ASRM members to contact the White House and their members of Congress to object to this reckless decision. The US capitol switchboard may be reached at 202-224-3121, the White House comment line is 202-456-1111, or you can use this link
