Advocacy in Action: August 2023
Date: August 29, 2023
Welcome to ASRM’s Advocacy in Action, where we give an overview of what our Government Affairs team has been working on, summarize relevant federal and state legislation, and highlight the advocacy and outreach efforts of our members. We are so thankful for the advocacy of our members; please get in touch with the Office of Public Affairs at email@example.com for more information on ways to get involved.
- In California, ASRM past president, Dr. Marcelle Cedars, spoke at a press conference in support of SB 729, an ASRM-backed IVF mandate. ASRM members in California can add your support to keep it going!
- In the District of Columbia, an ASRM-backed IVF mandate was signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser.
- Representative Connolly and Senator Duckworth sent a follow-up letter to the letter that the Alliance for Fertility Preservation, ASRM, and RESOLVE: the National Infertility Association sent to the Office of Personnel Management about the benefit design for coverage of fertility preservation services, urging the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to update the definition of infertility used by health insurance carriers participating in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program to be more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community. Dr. Michael Thomas was quoted in the press release as saying that, “ASRM wholeheartedly supports full-spectrum fertility health insurance coverage for all individuals so everyone has the opportunity to have the family of their choice. In order for the Federal government to continue being an equitable and competitive employer, ARSM encourages OPM to update its definition of infertility to account for same-sex couples and single individuals. Furthermore, the current definition does not allow healthcare providers to tailor care to each individual patient’s fertility journey, which creates unnecessary burdens on those seeking treatment. We thank Representative Connolly and Senator Duckworth for their leadership in sending this letter.”
- On August 29, our policy office hosted a joint policy briefing with ASRM President Dr. Michael Thomas, SMFM member Dr. David Hackney, and organizers from Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights and Protect Ohio Choice about their efforts to pass a ballot measure protecting abortion rights and the power of physician advocacy.
