Message From the Chair

by Jacqueline Gutmann, M.D.

The Women's Council (WC) was created long ago, when the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) was still known as the American Fertility Society (AFS) and the presence of women, particularly in leadership positions, was small. The WC provided an opportunity for these women, who worked in many different disciplines (mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, embryologists, etc.), to meet, network, share ideas and sometimes commiserate. Times have changed; the number and percentage of women members has increased, women have assumed leadership positions in a number of the Special Interest Groups and Professional Groups, led roundtables, symposia and postgraduate courses and have even been President of the ASRM.

Despite higher profiles of women within the ASRM, there is still a role (and perhaps even a greater role) for the WC in the ASRM. The WC continues to allow for interaction across disciplines, provides on opportunity for networking, and, perhaps, even commiseration. In addition, we will be unveiling a mentoring program, which would not have been possible without the help of Dr. Judy Horowitz and the Mentoring Committee of the Mental Health Professional Group. Information will be available on our web site. We are also planning on starting a list-serv for our members and will be voting on revised bylaws. Membership in the Women's Council is open to ALL members of ASRM, regardless of gender!
