Message from the Chair
One of the biggest hurdles in practicing fertility preservation is to bring oncologists together with fertility specialists on the issue. To overcome this barrier, and to create guidelines for fertility preservation in young people with cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology convened a multidisciplinary committee.
This committee, co-chaired by Kutluk Oktay, M.D., and Stephanie J. Lee, a medical oncologist, invited other experts in the field to join. Those included Leslie
Schover, Ph.D., for her expertise in psycho-social issues of cancer survivorship, Pasquale
Patrizio, M.D., for his expertise in medical ethics and andrology, Hamish Wallace, M.D., for his expertise in fertility preservation in children, and Lindsay Nohr Beck for her leadership in cancer survivorship issues.
Working with two other oncologists on the committee, the group put together the most
comprehensive guideline ever written on the topic within less than a year.
The guidelines have just been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (Less SJ et al. American Society of Clinical Oncology Recommendations on Fertility Preservation in Cancer Patients. J Clin Oncol 2006 Jun 20;24(18):2917-31.)
We believe this is one of the major strides in promoting the importance of fertility issues in young people with cancer, as
ASCO has more than 20,000 members worldwide, and its clinical guidelines carry heavy weight. The abstract of this article may be viewed at:
