Grand Rounds: Early Development, Culture and Transfer of the Embryo from Gametes to Blastocyst

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed guidelines for learning for the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). These guidelines specify that training should include information that provides the fellow with the ability to understand and describe the processes involved in human embryology. This internet activity is designed to provide such training to reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows as well as other practitioners of reproductive medicine.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Define “good” quality gametes.
- Review the basic requirements for culturing human embryos.
- Outline critical events of fertilization and developmental milestones of the preimplantation human embryo.
- Describe the pros and cons of blastocyst versus cleavage stage transfer.
