Grand Rounds: Current Status of Power Morcellation in Removal of Leiomyomas

(Credits no longer offered.)

Presented by Antonio R. Gargiulo, M.D., Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed guidelines for learning for the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). These guidelines specify that training should include information that provides the fellow with discussion concerning the indications and contraindications, complications of, and expected results, as well as performing surgical procedures appropriate to reproductive endocrinology. This internet activity is designed to provide such training to reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows as well as other practitioners of reproductive medicine.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Counsel patients on the morcellation controversy and on the merits of contained uterine tissue extraction
  2. Extract uterine tissue without a morcellator and without a mini-laparotomy
  3. Avoid open surgery for benign uterine disease.
