Infertility Doctors Support Improved Insurance Coverage

Denver CO – Fertility clinics who are members of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) overwhelmingly support laws which mandate insurance coverage for infertility care.

A survey of SART members showed that 95% of programs supported mandatory insurance for vulnerable populations, such as cancer patients. 78% supported it for the general population and 62% favor insurance coverage for transgender patients.

While exact numbers are difficult to come by, only a minority of American health care plans provide coverage for infertility therapies. As a result, much of the care provided is paid for directly by the patient. Some observers had thought that infertility practices would be uninterested in insurance coverage because it is believed it came with lower reimbursements and increased bureaucracy.

“The nation’s infertility physicians want to expand access to care. Only with improved insurance and more Americans with insurance can we begin to help all the patients who need our services.” Said David Seifer, MD, President of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology and author of the study.
