ASRM has joined several leading national medical and public health organizations including AMA and ACOG, on an amicus brief in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in the case of Reproductive Health Serices of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Regional, et al. V. Governor Michael L. Parson, et al.
Last year, the Missouri legislature passed H.B 126, which would essentially outlaw nearly all abortions after eight weeks’ gestation and set the stage, should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade, to criminalize all abortions in the state.
ASRM joins other national experts in urging the court to uphold an injunction placed on the law within a day of its enactment on the grounds that it’s both unconstitutional and counter to the goal of protecting women’s health. The law would impermissibly intrude into the patient-physician relationship and curtail the ability of physicians to recommend treatments they deem essential for the well-being of their patients.
The brief provides background to support that abortion is a safe, common medical procedure and something that the medical community recognizes as an essential component of women’s healthcare.
ASRM Applauds Governor Cuomo for including the Child-Parent Security Act in his Executive Budget
On Tuesday, January 21, Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered his FY21 Executive Budget which highlights the issues he views as top priorities for the state of New York. This year he has chosen to support the Child-Parent Security Act (CPSA) by including it in his Executive Budget.
The CPSA will legalize the recognition of gestational carrier contracts as well as provide strengthened protections for gestational carriers and intended parents alike. This is a major win for CPSA advocates as it indicates a strong chance of passage. ASRM has been working in coalition with a host of partners from the infertility community to get this bill passed for many years and we are thrilled to have Gov. Cuomo’s full support on this very important matter.
