ASRM Goes to Geneva for the World Health Organization’s Global Summit on Safety and Access to Fertility Care

This week, members of ASRM’s leadership team are meeting with other leaders in reproductive health from around the world in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO is holding its Global Summit on Safety and Access to Fertility Care to develop strategies for improving access to safe, ethical, and cost-effective fertility care, particularly in developing countries. This conference follows up on an ASRM-sponsored meeting in 2015.

The summit has brought experts together from the spheres of industry, academia, government, professional societies and patient advocacy to discuss issues that affect millions of people in low and middle income countries who need to receive fertility care. These include the challenge of providing high value care for infertility in health care resource-limited countries with limited access to sophisticated but costly assisted reproductive technologies- including the high cost of ART medications and equipment; the legal frameworks for third party reproduction; social and legal impediments to single peoples’ and same sex couples’ treatment; cross-border fertility care; and establishing basic laboratory standards for the delivery of safe and effective infertility services.

ASRM’s President, Dr. Peter Schlegel said, “We are honored to be among those asked to participate in the Summit. Since ASRM convened our own Access to Care Summit three years ago, we have been educating our members on access issues, investigating pathways they can use to bring fertility care to underserved populations in their own states and cities, and advocating that fertility care is integral to basic health care. That is why we are very excited to collaborate with our international colleagues in laying the groundwork for plans that will help those in developing countries who need medical help to have a family. ASRM is sponsoring research directed to improve the delivery of infertility care in developing countries, as well.”
