John J. Stangel, M.D.
Dr. John J. Stangel, a distinguished reproductive medicine specialist, passed away on April 25, 2023 at his home in Mt. Kisco, NY. He was a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) since 1972, and his contributions to the field of fertility research and treatments were highly valued by his peers. Dr. Stangel was also a member of the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI).After studying at Cornell University and Syracuse University and completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Stangel pursued a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at New York Medical College, where he was one of the first group of physicians to take and pass the new medical boards for this subspecialty. He worked on the cutting edge of fertility treatments throughout his career and became a pre-eminent researcher, surgeon, and lecturer.
Dr. Stangel's work in reproductive medicine extended to his private practice in White Plains and Rye, NY, where he treated every patient personally with the help of his nursing and support staff. He became the Medical Director of IVF Australia/IVF America in Port Chester, NY, one of the earliest and largest in-vitro fertilization programs in the US, and the Westchester County Medical Director of Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT).
Dr. Stangel was regularly honored for his excellence in fertility research and treatments and was named President of the Westchester County Medical Society. He authored numerous impactful scientific papers and articles and contributed to essential texts in his specialty. In 1979, he wrote Fertility and Conception: The Essential Guide for Childless Couples (Paddington) and co-authored The Unofficial Guide to Getting Pregnant (Wiley) in 2005.
Dr. Stangel's passion for his work and his dedication to his patients created countless families and changed lives. Patients traveled from around the world to seek his treatment, and many of them became his lifelong friends.
Dr. Stangel is survived by his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law, and his three granddaughters. He will be deeply missed by his many friends and colleagues in the field of reproductive medicine and beyond.
