The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) announced that it had joined into official relations as a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) with the World Health Organization (WHO) beginning in 2014. The WHO Executive Board voted to approve ASRM's application earlier in the year. 

Illness is not limited by political boundaries. It is vital that we work with our colleagues from all over the world to improve the care of reproductive disorders. We are anxious to work with governments and other NGO's as we all strive to improve global reproductive health. Patients the world over deserve access to the best care possible. In an increasingly interconnected world, it is clear that this cannot happen by nations acting alone.

ASRM 2014-2019 Executive Director Richard H. Reindollar, MD, speaking from a meeting of the Asian Pacific Initiative on Reproduction in Brisbane Australia added,

While the formal recognition from WHO is new for us, a global presence is not. For many years a growing number of our members, and the intellectual energy they bring with them, have been international. We are thrilled to be entering into an official relationship with WHO and look forward to increasing our role as a member of the global health community.

In 2020 the WHO Executive Board renewed the ASRM’s status as a Non-State Actor (NSA) in official relations with the WHO. In this role, the ASRM is one of the few organizations worldwide assisting the WHO in achieving its global health objectives.

As we are reminded every day, illness does not respect political boundaries. It is vital that we work with our colleagues from all over the world to improve the care of reproductive disorders. We are eager to continue our work with governments and other NSAs as we all strive to improve global reproductive health. Patients the world over deserve access to the best care possible. ASRM 2020 CEO Ricardo Azziz MD, added:

We are pleased to renew our status as an official NSA with the WHO. That is but one part of our global presence, however. We have members in over 100 countries, conduct programs with our counterparts all over the world and have initiated projects in multiple countries. ASRM’s role as a leader in the global reproductive health community is something we take quite seriously, and we look forward to continued collaboration with our world-wide partners.
