Rebecca Z. Sokol MD, MPH, took over as acting President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) on January 1, 2014. With more than 8,000 members around the world ASRM is the world’s leading professional organization in reproductive medicine, providing education and advocacy in areas including infertility, menopause, contraception and andrology. Dr. Sokol’s ascension was triggered by ASRM President Richard H. Reindollar, MD resigning that position in order to serve as the organization’s Executive Director. Dr. Sokol will serve as acting President until October when she will, as scheduled, begin serving a full 12-month term as President of the Society.
Dr. Sokol is currently Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. A life-long Californian, Dr. Sokol attended Claremont College’s Pitzer College, majoring in English and Biology. She received her MD degree from USC, did her residency in Internal Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and her fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center. She also holds a MPH degree from USC. Dr. Sokol is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
A winner of numerous awards for both her clinical and research work, and author of numerous publications and invited lectureships, Dr. Sokol’s areas of interest and expertise include infertility, reproductive toxicology, and androgen disorders. The NIH has supported her research for over 25 years. Dr. Sokol has a long history of service and leadership in the field, having served as President of the Pacific Coast Fertility Society and the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology. She has served ASRM as a Director, Chair of the Finance Committee, Vice President, and President-Elect.
“If anyone can handle serving nearly two years as ASRM President, it’s Dr. Sokol. I am confident Rebecca’s wisdom, insight and skilled leadership will guide our organization to new heights,” said Linda C. Giudice, MD, PhD, immediate Past-President of ASRM.
