Advanced Searches on the ASRM Web site
You can simply enter a search word and the ASRM search function will
display a list of all the Web pages on the ASRM Web site that contain that word. However, if you wish to do
more advanced searches, this page contains some guidelines, from the
simplest to the most complex.
You can enter more than one search word
If you enter more than one search word, the
search function treats the words as an "and" search.
- Example: If you enter "hormone therapy", the
search will find all Web pages that contain both words. Or you can
enter a string of, for example, three or more words such as "in
vitro fertilization".
Here are some guidelines for an "and" search:
- All entered words must be present on a Web page for a match to
occur.
- You don't have to explicitly enter the word "and". When you enter a string of words without the word
"and", the search function assumes you want to do an
"and" type of search.
You can do an "or" search
In addition to the "and" search, you can also do an
"or" search.
- Example: If you enter "hormone or therapy", the search will
find any Web pages that contain "hormone" and any Web pages
that contain "therapy".
Here are some guidelines for the "or" search:
- Only one of the words needs to be present on the page for a match to
occur. So, this type of search typically returns more results than an
"and" search.
- If you want to do an
"or" search, then you need to explicitly enter the
"or" as in "hormone or therapy".
The "and" and
"or" are technically called Boolean operators. A search with
these types of operators can be very sophisticated and allow the user
to obtain more precise search results then a simple search on one
keyword. The next section describes some advanced
searches.
You can do complex "and" and "or" searches
If you are familiar with advanced searches, here are some allowable
advanced search examples:
- hormone and diagnosis or therapy
- hormone and (diagnosis or therapy)
- not (diagnosis or therapy) and hormone
