CA Governor Signs One Infertility Related Bill; Vetoes Two Others

The Governor signed into law AB 460, a bill to protect infertility insurance coverage decisions from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Insurance coverage for infertility is based on a definition of infertility that requires the inability to conceive a pregnancy or carry a pregnancy to a live birth after a year or more of regular sexual relations without contraception.  Failure to have an opposite sex partner renders this definition impractical, hence the need for legislation. Language in the bill clarified that nothing in this bill should interfere with the clinical judgment of a physician and surgeon, and that insurers and HMOs are prohibited from making coverage decisions on a discriminatory basis.

ASRM and ACOG Issue Opinion Advocating for Reduction in Toxic Environmental Agents

Toxic chemicals in the environment harm our ability to reproduce, negatively affect pregnancies, and are associated with numerous other long-term health problems, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). In a joint Committee Opinion, The College and ASRM urge ob-gyns to advocate for government policy changes to identify and reduce exposure to toxic environmental agents.

Probability Of Live Birth After Egg Freezing Related To Patient Age And Freezing Method

For the first time, in Fertility and Sterility, researchers present age-specific probabilities of live birth after IVF with frozen eggs.   Although IVF with frozen eggs results in lower live birth rates than fresh IVF cycles, the technique plays an important part in the treatment of infertility patients for whom embryo freezing presents religious or ethical obstacles and for patients whose cycles are interrupted.

The FIGO Committee on Reproductive Medicine (FIGO CRM) was established in October, 2009 under the Chairmanship of Dr. David Adamson, (USA). Other Committee members include Siladitya Bhattacharya, Co-chair (UK), John Collins (Canada), Klaus Diedrich (Germany), Silke Dyer (South Africa), Egbert te Velde (Netherlands), Christine Robinson (UK), PC Wong (Singapore) and Fernando Zegers-Hochschild (Chile). The mission of the FIGO CRM is to create access to quality reproductive medical care for women across the world.
