Dedicated to understanding the psychological, social, and emotional perspecitives of infertility patients.
What is the MHPG?
The Mental Health Professional Group (MHPG) is a multidisciplinary group that formed in 1985 with the full support of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Its mission is to promote scientific understanding of the psychological, social, and emotional perspectives of infertility patients.
Goals of the MHPG
-
Promote greater awareness of the psychological dimensions of reproductive health issues and treatment.
-
Educate ASRM members and the general public about emotional aspects of infertility and the need for support services
in conjunction with medical care.
-
Encourage research into the psychosocial aspects of reproductive health.
-
Provide materials that enable practitioners to better meet their patients’ needs for information and support.
The MHPG achieves these goals through the support of scientific research studies, the development of treatment strategies, the education of doctors and patients, and the delineation of guidelines for mental health professionals in reproductive medicine.
Activities and Accomplishments
The MHPG Chair communicates directly with the ASRM President and Executive Director. MHPG members have gained representation on essential committees within the ASRM. Patient advocacy groups and mental health professional associations have recognized our role in the treatment, education, and research of psychological issues in reproductive health. Since 1985, the MHPG has:
-
Participated in developing ASRM patient information booklets and fact sheets.
-
Participated in multidisciplinary seminars and symposia and presented abstracts, papers, posters, and roundtables at the ASRM Annual Meeting.
-
Taught annual postgraduate courses that have addressed the psychological challenges of reproductive life events, the impact of medical advances on patients and health care practitioners, and the role of infertility counseling in reproductive medicine.
Becoming a Member
All active members of the ASRM may join the MHPG. The interdisciplinary nature of the MHPG provides a forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences, as well as the opportunity to form collegial relationships with others who share your concerns. These discussions and alliances are important at a time when reproductive health care professionals are confronting a host of clinical and ethical challenges that have - and will continue to have - an impact on individuals, families, and society at large.
Membership includes the following benefits:
-
A subscription to Fertility and Sterility, ASRM News, and the MHPG Newsletter.
-
An Internet listserv for MHPG members to discuss clinical, ethical, and reproductive mental health issues and make and
receive referrals.
-
Access to “members only” resources and sections of the ASRM Web Site.
-
The opportunity to participate in MHPG educational and business activities at the ASRM Annual Meeting.
-
The opportunity to participate in MHPG committees and task force groups that influence research and national ASRM
policy, as well as develop psychological evaluation protocols, publications, and educational programs.
- The opportunity to contribute to the knowledge base in reproductive mental health issues.
