Alan E. Guttmacher, M.D., Director, The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, wrote in an announcement,
“After a rigorous, national search that attracted an impressive array of outstanding candidates, I am extremely pleased to announce that Catherine Y. Spong, M.D. has been selected as the Deputy Director of NICHD. Cathy brings extensive and impressive experience in both our intramural and extramural programs to the position, along with intelligence, interpersonal skills, and visionary leadership that have won her a high level of respect in our research communities.
For the last two years, Dr. Spong has served as the inaugural NICHD Associate Director for Extramural Research and Director of the Division of Extramural Research. For over a decade before that, she was Chief of the Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch, NICHD, and has had a consistent history of exemplary accomplishment, leadership, and recognition throughout her career. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City in 1991. After serving as Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Spong began her career at the NICHD as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellow, including clinical work at Georgetown University, and then became a Clinical Associate and subsequently, Senior Staff Fellow in our intramural research program. In 2001, she was selected to lead NICHD’s Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch, simultaneously maintaining a productive intramural research laboratory as Chief of the Unit on Perinatal and Developmental Neurobiology.
Dr. Spong’s career spans over 20 years of outstanding medical and clinical research accomplishments and contributions, and she is a recognized national and international expert in the field of maternal and fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. She is a prolific author of important scientific publications and textbooks, has served as an editor of leading scientific journals, and has represented the NICHD ably in many public and professional forums. She has received numerous awards and recognition, both from the NIH and external sources. As a physician-scientist she has made seminal contributions both to our scientific understanding and to the health and well-being of countless individuals around the globe.
Cathy brings to the position of NICHD Deputy Director a keen intellect, an impressively broad and deep professional background, demonstrated leadership skills, and an ability to think creatively about science and medicine, all of which I anticipate will make her an excellent deputy director for NICHD.
Please join me in welcoming Cathy to this key NICHD leadership position.”
Dr. Spong is board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology and is the maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the NIH’s Clinical Center and at INOVA Alexandria hospital. She is a fellow of ACOG and a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, the Society for Neuroscience, and the Perinatal Research Society. Dr. Spong is the NICHD liaison for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Executive Board and the Liaison Committee of Obstetrician/Gynecologists.
