ASRM issued the following statement in conjunction with the Task Force’s release of its recommendations.
Statement attributable to Roger Lobo, MD, Immediate Past President.
It is very important that patients understand what this report does not say: it does not recommend against the use of hormone therapy for the relief of menopausal symptoms.
The report issued by the USPSTF today is consistent with a consensus document recently issued by 15 of the world's leading menopause organizations, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, stating that the use of hormone therapy for short-term relief of menopausal is safe and effective.
This report deals with the long-term use of hormone therapy to enhance cardiovascular and bone health. While there have been conflicting studies on those questions, the most up-to-date studies, in fact so up-to-date they have not been included in this report, seem to point to health benefits from even long term-use of hormone therapy.
