ASRM Announces Awards
- Distinguished Researcher Award Goes to Serdar E. Bulun, MD, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
- Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award Goes to Clarisa R. Gracia, MD, MSCE University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine
- Suheil J. Muasher, MD, Distinguished Service Award Goes to Eli Reshef, MD
San Diego, CA – The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) today announced the winners of the three highest individual awards of the Society: the Distinguished Researcher Award to Serdar E. Bulun, MD, of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award to Clarisa R. Gracia, MD, MSCE of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and the Suheil J. Muasher, MD, Distinguished Service Award to Eli Reshef, MD, Medical Director of the Henry G. Bennett, Jr. Fertility Institute.
The Distinguished Researcher Award is given to a scientist with a long record of important scientific achievement in the field of reproductive medicine. The 2012 recipient Serdar E. Bulun, MD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Bulun has a distinguished career with a focus in the area of estrogen-responsive abnormalities of the uterus. He made a significant global impact on medicine via pioneering contributions to the epigenetics, pathology and therapeutic aspects of steroid production and action in understudied areas of endometriosis and uterine fibroids. He is responsible for introducing aromatase inhibitors as an effective class of drugs to treat endometriosis. To support his research, Dr. Bulun has secured more than $20 million in federal funding. He has also published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and trained 38 pre- and post-doctoral students over his career.
Clarisa R. Gracia, MD, MSCE has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award. This award recognizes scientific excellence in reproductive medicine for work done within ten years of completion of their training. Dr. Gracia is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine where she has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and obtained a prestigious R01 grant in the area of fertility preservation. Her primary research focus is on ovarian aging, either natural or induced as part of gonadotoxic cancer treatments. Dr. Gracia serves on the ASRM Practice Committee.
The 2012 Suheil J. Muasher, MD, Distinguished Service Award goes to Eli Reshef, MD, Medical Director of the Henry G. Bennett, Jr. Fertility Institute. Dr. Reshef has labored tirelessly to advocate for open access to reproductive care, for liability reform and helped to defeat personhood legislation in his home state of Oklahoma and has been active in educating fertility experts across the country about the harms of personhood legislation. He has spearheaded the formation of a personhood extinguisher toolkit that ASRM members can use to fight personhood initiatives in their own states.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, founded in 1944, is an organization of more than 7,000 physicians, researchers, nurses, technicians and other professionals dedicated to advancing knowledge and expertise in reproductive biology. Affiliated societies include the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society of Reproductive Surgeons and the Society of Reproductive Biologists and Technologists.
